Description


This study cycle can be followed through two different paths (Plan A and Plan B); either Plan A or Plan B require writing and presenting a PhD Thesis. This PhD Thesis has to be writen in accordance to the rules and format approved by the History Department of Minho University.
In Plan A, the three academic years are entirely dedicated to defining a research project, conducting research and writing a PhD Thesis under the supervision of one of the lecturers of the History Department of Minho University and in one of the scientific areas of Medieval History, Modern History, Contemporary History, History of Portuguese Maritime Discoveries and Expansion, Theory and Research Methods, Historical Demography, Art History and Patrimony.
In Plan B, the first academic year includes four curricular units (Project Seminar I and II and Specialization Seminar I and II) and students are required to present and start a research project; the second and third academic years are devoted to the conclusion of research and the writing of a PhD Thesis under the supervision of one of the lecturers of the History Department of Minho University and in one of the scientific areas of Medieval History, Modern History, Contemporary History, History of Portuguese Maritime Discoveries and Expansion, Theory and Research Methods, Historical Demography, Art History and Patrimony.

Formal requirements


Candidates to a cycle of studies leading to a PhD degree, in the version compatible with Bologna should meet one of the following requirements:
- be the holder of a masters’ degree or legal equivalent;
- possess a graduate degree, and make proof of an especially relevant scientific or teaching curriculum that is to be recognized by the Scientific committee of the History Department of the Institute of Social Sciences of Minho University as attesting the capabilities needed to the achievement of this cycle of studies;
- present a teaching, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the Scientific Committee of the History Department of the Institute of Social Sciences of Minho University as attesting the capabilities needed to achieve this cycle of studies.
